Civil Partnership Dissolution

Solicitors specialising in Dissolving Civil Partnerships

Since December 2005 gay and lesbian couples have been able to enter into formal Civil Partnerships under the 2004 Civil Partnership Act. Sadly as with marriage, civil partnerships also suffer from relationship breakdown. Although by 2010 over 40,000 couples had entered into a Civil Partnership, since then there has been a steady rise in couples looking for Civil Partnership Dissolution (as Civil Partnership Divorce or Gay Marriage Divorce is technically known).

If your partnership is breaking down and you're considering a Civil Partnership Dissolution, it’s sensible to get specialist and sympathetic legal advice. Rest assured that our Civil Partnership Dissolution team can provide that advice.

What does civil partnership dissolution involve?

In the same way that the 2004 Civil Partnership Act granted gay and lesbian couples broadly similar responsibilities and rights as those enjoyed by married couples, the Act also provides for Civil Partnership Dissolution to follow a very similar process to divorce. However amongst the slight differences are the limitation on which courts are actually permitted to deal with Civil Partnership Dissolution, and the fact that, unlike marriage, adultery is not considered to be a ground for dissolution. In dealing with dissolution, the courts also have the power to deal with both children and financial matters in a similar way to divorce.
