Judicial Separation
As an alternative to divorce, a couple can obtain a Judicial Separation – a process similar to divorce but leaving the couple legally married.
If your religion forbids divorce or for any other reason you are unable or do not want a divorce, you can choose Judicial Separation to legally end your relationship.
Judicial separation is often used if a couple have been married for less than 1 year or are in a marriage where religious beliefs do not allow divorce. Judicial Separation does not dissolve the marriage, so a judicially separated couple cannot re-marry. However, the court does have power to finalize financial issues, with the exception of pension-splitting.
