Step 2 – Attend a MIAM (Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting)
A MIAM is usually the first step in family mediation.
This is a private one-to-one meeting between you and our mediator (the other person does not attend this first meeting).
During the MIAM we will:
- Explain how mediation works
- Discuss your situation
- Consider whether mediation is suitable
- Answer your questions about cost and timescale
- Confirm whether court proceedings require a MIAM certificate
The meeting usually lasts around 45–60 minutes and is held online.
Step 3 – Joint Online Mediation Sessions
If mediation is appropriate and both parties agree to proceed, joint sessions can be arranged.
Online mediation allows you to:
- Take part from your own home
- Avoid sitting in the same room if that feels difficult
- Use breakout rooms if required
- Keep discussions structured and focused
Sessions are confidential and conducted by our experienced family mediator, who is also a qualified family lawyer. This dual qualification allows for practical, legally informed discussions.
What Can Be Discussed in Online Mediation?
Online family mediation can help resolve issues such as:
- Child arrangements
- Parenting schedules
- Financial settlements
- Property division
- Spousal maintenance
Please note: specialist child arrangement mediation accreditation is a separate qualification. We can advise you whether your case is suitable for our mediation service, and if necessary, introduce you to a specialist child arrangements mediator.
How Much Does Online Family Mediation Cost?
We provide clear information about:
- MIAM costs
- Hourly mediation session rates
- Document preparation (such as Memorandum of Understanding)
Legal Aid may be available in some very limited cases. Please note that we are not able to provide family mediation using legal aid.

Yes. Online family mediation is fully recognised in England and Wales and can:
- Satisfy the MIAM requirement before issuing court proceedings

Frequently Asked Questions About Booking Online Family Mediation
Do I have to attend a MIAM before going to court?
In most cases, yes. Court rules require applicants in family cases to attend a MIAM unless an exemption applies.
Can mediation be done entirely online?
Yes. Both MIAMs and joint sessions can be conducted via secure video conferencing.
What if the other person refuses mediation?
You can still attend a MIAM. If mediation is not suitable or the other person declines, the mediator can sign the required court form.
How quickly can I book a MIAM?
Appointments are usually available within a short timeframe. Contact us to discuss current availability.
Is online mediation confidential?
Yes. Mediation is confidential and without prejudice, except in limited safeguarding circumstances.
Do I need a solicitor as well as a mediator?
You may wish to obtain independent legal advice alongside mediation. Because our mediator is also a qualified solicitor, legal context can be explained during the process.
